Bad news is always bad, but when you hear bad news on your birthday, it is the worst. Yesterday I celebrated 28 years of life. My family came to San Francisco from Oroville to be with me as I received the news about my test results from my cancer doctor.
Coming into the appointment I had assumed several things. I am young, so the tumor can’t be that big and they can just do some surgery and cut it out. Worst case they can take my left lung out, I like my right one better anyway. It can’t be that bad. So with my family all in the room, the doctor tells me that I have a large tumor on my lower left lung and that the lymph nodes on the left side are affected and they also found lymph nodes under my right lung that are also affected. That makes the cancer a stage IIIB which borderlines on stage IV. As soon as I heard that my ears began to ring as if a bomb had gone off next to my face. The doctor continued and said that because it is stage IIIB they cannot do surgery. He encouraged me that because I am so young and my general health is good that I have a slightly better chance of being cured than most others. I asked what makes IIIB different than IV, and he said that if it where IV they would help me be as comfortable as possible until the end. So basically I am on the edge of terminal.
This was not the news I was expecting and my thoughts now consisted of, ‘Why did we not know it was this bad before? Where did it it even come from? But it’s my birthday! When will I be able to breathe normally again? How long will all this take? Will I survive this? How am I suppose to feel right now? Stop. Jesus, please give me peace! Give me shalom.’
The doctor made several treatment suggestions and each one had plenty of risks. I could do the Chemo/Radiation which shows proven results in the shortest time but will take the hardest toll on my body leaving a lot of scar tissue. I could try some phase 1 experimental drugs that help the body see cancer cells as a threat and allow the white blood cells to target the cells for termination. This one sounds good but it has never been tested and their is absolutely no guarantee that it will work. Also, the side effects are unknown. I could seek out other alternative treatments from other cancer centers.
I asked the doctor what he suggested and he said I should do the most known and effective treatment, which is chemo/radiation which would be a 13 week process with daily treatments. He also suggested I get a second opinion which I am currently doing.
I am in complete shock right now: one day I have a normal life and feel great, and the next I have stage IIIB cancer and have to face difficult choices of how to deal with it.
After my appointment, I was so lost in thought that it was hard to be present with my family and friends. At shabbat dinner last night I told a few friends, ate dinner, and left early. I just needed to sit silently for a while and think and I still need to just “be” for a while and gather my thoughts. I feel like I have been knocked off my horse and broken both legs, making me immobile. Now I am praying and waiting on the Lord to move in my heart and be my strength.

I’m so sorry, Sean, to hear this news. I was thinking the same as you stated here in the beginning. We are praying for you and Sarah on Facebook and at our church. A few year ago I went through a deep trial, nothing comparable to yours, yet I thought I was on the brink of eternity. But the Lord was teaching me many things, one was to appropriate His peace. The Lord Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful” (John 14:27). I needed to believe that and receive His peace. “I have Your peace.” Still, I was troubled but not wanting to be, and wanting to obey the last part of that verse. He did show me this: “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31-32). I came to the understanding that the Lord Jesus prayed for me. His peace eventually rose in my heart and He filled me with hope, especially after He revealed this verse to me. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). You can know this, Sean, “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). That hand bears the scars of the new covenant made for you on the cross; the One who redeemed you is with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.
Lifting you up in prayer.
The Lord will get you through this hard time and use your testimony to help others. We have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. So I ask you not to lose heart over what you are suffering for Him, which is for His glory. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Dear Sean, I’m Rachel and Karyn Rothspan’s mom. You were one of the first people to “friend” me when I first joined FB. Rachel shared with me in the car about your illness yesterday, and now I just read what you had posted here.
I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but my heart is really heavy burdened for you. The only thing I can say, which I think you know, is that GOD will lead and guide you in the decisions you should make on treating this cancer; I do know for certain that GOD is able to heal you, and this will be my fervent prayer; not just physically, but spiritually as well. Sean you sound like a very determined young man. I, too, would go with the chemo and radiation. Sound treatment first and then if that doesn’t work go to the experimental variety. I might also check out Cancer Centers of America. I believe they have excellent results. As a 10 year cancer survivor, I can tell you that God will keep you at peace and will give you the comfort that He alone can give. Many blessings to you as you travel this very new road.

Sean, I am a friend of the Brown Family, they brought me to know Jesus. I am great full every day. Your Mom, was in my Wedding,Grandma Lucy made my cake. I went to Visit your Uncle Rick and Aunt Linda, in Germany with your Mom and Aunt Diane. Your Aunt Susan and I played music together as teenagers. My mother passed away from Lung Cancer (74), she was a heavy smoker and had quit for 10 years before it got her. I have another friend who was diagnosed with stage IV small cell. She did the radiation and chemo route and has been clean for 3 years and she is in her 60’s. I myself had some health scares in January and spent 2 weeks in the hospital with many transfusions, blood and platlets. I know it sucks the wind out of you. I am glad you are blogging, it helped me to talk through it with others too. What ever direction you take now is forward. Don’t stay in one place, as it is easy to get frozen mentally and physically. I know this is a LOT of information, but it’s important that people don’t panic when facing this diagnosis. The cancer doesn’t body overnight, and people have a little time to do some research. All of the above doctors/clinics will take the time to talk with people and give them some direction. And even if people to go with conventional treatment, there are things they can do and supplements they can take that will greatly improve the side effects.
I am not an expert by any stretch, just someone who has recently been doing a fair amount of cancer research and has learned a lot and very willing to share what I have learned.

I first saw a post on Facebook from my FB friend Debbie Jarus who has commented previous and have read your story…I have not personally experienced cancer, but have lost many family members to the disease…some lived longer than others on holistic treatments rather than conventional. I’m sorry to hear that you have “cancer”. The church my Brother goes to, Livng Word Family Church, in Santa Rosa , is a Holy Spirit Filled church. On Sundays and Wednesday evening services, the Pastors lay hands on those who need healing, and they are healed. My Brother has had a number of things needing healing, and duing tyhe service, the pastors lay their hands on people, and they are healed, and are Baptized by the Holy Spirit. Over the last eight plus months, Pastor Mario Murillo had been at the church for special healing services. In the first couple of months, there were over 300 people healed of Cancer; and one woman was given a week to live by her Doctor. She came to the church from out of town, and said to the pastors “what do I have to Lose? I am going to die in a week, anyway. The Holy Spirit healed her completely, and Pastor Murillo told her to go back to her doctor. She came back the next week, and told Pastor Murillo that the Doctor could find no sign she had ever had any cancer. I have been having Heart problems, for the six years, I have had two heart murmurs, and a bad valve in my heart. Then after having what I thought may have been a Heart Attack, my Cardiologist scheduled a Stress Test-Echo. During the test, my heart had an irregualr heart beat, and he scheduled a CardiacAngiocatheterization, where they pass a cather through a vein in my right arm, into my heart. About a week before the proceedure, My Brother was at church, where the pastor had a Word of Knowledge, during a healing service, where he said “there is someone who does not go to this church, who is being healed of heart problems. My Brother claimed the healing, for me. The next day, I went down to Kaiser San Rafael to have the proceedure done. After about a half hour, they said there was nothing wrong with my heart; and that it is in perfect condition. That night my Brother called and told me what had happened, and I told him what the Doctor told me. That means that God healed my heart. I got a copy of the Complete Jewish Bible, from christianbook.com, for only $22.00; retail is $35.00, and gave it to my new Physician, at Kaiser in Petaluma. My Doctor is Jewish, and I really wanted a way of thanking him for Renewing my Prescription for Qualiquin Quinine Sulfate, which is no longer available in the U.S.. I gave him a number of books I got from christianbook.com, for hardly any money at all. I asked him if I could bring by a Pork Roast for him and his family. He said no to the roast, but did say if I wanted to, he would really like a great Kosher sandwich and salad, for him at work; because he doesn’t get done till around 8 p.m. He said his wife and children are all vegetarians, but he really likes meat. There is a great Kosher Deli in Santa Rosa, called Mac’s Delicatessin, on Fourht street. It has been there for almost fifty years, and the original owner, Mac, is still servin customers. The next time you are going to be in Santa Rosa, let me know a couple of days in advance, and I will treat you to lunch, at Mac’s. I get a Kosher Beef Tongue sandwich, with about 11/2 inches of meet, on fresh rye or pumpernickel. You also get your choice of a salad, and you also get a half Kosher dill pickel, all for about $7.00. Sean, I got the news of my cancer 17 days after my 54th birthday. Difference is mine WAS breast cancer. I was told my tumor was stage 3, 9.5cm and HER2 positive (deadly until 18 years ago). I did chemo and radiation. I am still on a “target” therapy that will last (every three weeks) until March 2014. This will be the 2 year mark of having infusions of some type. A few months ago at one of my appointments, my doctor informed me that my cancer had really been stage 3C but she didn’t want me to worry
I had to have a complete total modified radical mastectomy with lymph nodes being removed also. They only found 36 centralized cancer cells in 1 of the 12 lymph nodes they removed and 0 in the breast tissue. I pray your doctors have the wisdom my doctors at UCLA had. I am still here, cancer free at this moment in time, by the Grace of God.

We are all sad to hear your grave news. You might want to consider looking at health.us news.com/best-hospitals/rankings/cancer. UCSF is in the top 10, but it may be worth checking with one of the top 5 for a second opinion. Elaine had 30 doses of radiation and 9 rounds of chemo. It was hard on her (were you at WWW north that year?) but our faithful Lord helped us through, and now she is taking physics and calculus!

I am praying! In your search for what to do next, please consider watching a movie (should b available on streaming netflix) called The Gerson Miracle. It is absolutely worth this time you will spend watching it. G-d is a miraculous healer and sometimes gives us opportunities for healing in interesting ways. There is also a book called Crazy Sexy Cancer by a very inspiring woman names Kris Karr (I hope I spelled her name right).
I too encouraged Sean to look into the Gerson clinic! I believe 100% in it, and it has proven itself over and over again! I pray Sean looks into this before going with chemo and radiation!!!!
Robin-I hope that Sean will truly investigate it. G-d has designed our body to heal itself and when we give our bodies the right tools, it’s amazing to see what happens. While I believe that G-d does give wisdom to doctors, I also believe that the pharmaceutical industry has a much bigger influence on doctors’ day to day treatment decisions then even many in the medical community realize. It’s these big pharma companies that fund all the research that doctors turn to when looking for answers. There are times when “traditional” (western) cancer treatments have been known to do more harm then good. Sean has a big decision to make and I pray that G-d would lead him to make the decision that has His best in store for Sean.

I was diagnosed with cancer stage 3 and currently am undergoing chemotherapy at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (where I had my second opinion).

Although we don’t know each other well, I want you to know that your reputation precedes you… The kind of man you are – the kind who seeks after HaShem, the kind of man who believes in Yeshua with all of his heart and will devote his life in an act worship in order to bring Yeshua to those who don’t yet believe, particularly the Jewish people… a man who does this even when he’s in the hospital with a Jewish nurse, the kind of man who maintains an attitude of hope even when it’s difficult to even see a flicker of light, the kind of man who is transparent about his needs and weaknesses in a time like this – and who is willing to reach out for help through prayer, practical physical needs, and words of encouragement. This has blessed me beyond measure. Thank you for being honest and for clinging to HaShem so faithfully – even though it may seem difficult to do so.
My prayer for you, first, is for healing. Secondly, is that we will be able to stand with you – in those times when it may feel too difficult for you to pray or have strength to believe. May we be with you in the wilderness – and hold up your arms like they did for Moses. May you feel our prayers and know that you and your wife are not alone. And finally, I pray that you will have hope.
The truth is, we don’t know why things like this happen to “good people”. But this is what we do know, is that G-d remains faithful and that G-d has a way of surprising us and that G-d never leaves us or forsakes us. He is a G-d of hope and He reigns supreme. He is also a G-d who chose to walk among us, so He would know what it was like to suffer and feel pain. So, then He is also the G-d who knows how to comfort us and knows us better than anyone else. He is the G-d of peace.
I have never been diagnosed with cancer, and I am not implying that I understand how difficult this is for you. But on a much smaller scale, I went through a difficult trial in my life – and I felt very alone. It was difficult to see the hand of HaShem. Sometimes even when we are surrounded by many supportive people, it may feel like only YOU know how difficult it REALLY is. And, in a way, that’s true… But since I don’t know any new information on how to cure cancer, I wanted to try to give you something – to leave you with this note that I wrote on Facebook as I was coming out of that particular trial. I hope that somehow it can bless you during this time. Not everything will relate to you… but I hope that it can be of some comfort to you.

Charoset and Maror

During this time of year, many thoughts come to mind. Particularly this year – the Charoset and Maror of Passover took on special meaning for me.
The Charoset is a sweet food made with apples, nuts, juice and honey eaten at the Passover Seder -representing the mortar that the Jewish people used as they labored in Egypt. The Maror is typically horseradish – a bitter food that can bring tears to the eyes – helping us to remember the bitterness of the sufferings of the Jewish people in Egypt.
The Passover Seder is a time to reflect on the redemption of G-d. We have a foreshadowing of the redemption we have in Messiah Yeshua. When Israel left Egypt – their destination was Canaan – the land flowing with milk and honey. They were free from Egypt – but the richness of their redemption was not yet actualized. There was a journey…
Similarly, we are called by G-d to rely on Him to be free from the bondage of sin. To accept Yeshua’s sacrifice – to put the blood on the doorpost.
In this life there is much suffering. Even when we trust in G-d, we may suffer. The sweetness of these sufferings comes from the closeness that we have with G-d when life is bitter.
We are being redeemed.
“For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of HaShem, and if children, heirs also, heirs of HaShem and fellow heirs with Messiah, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of HaShem.” Rom. 8:15-19
Yeshua has suffered with us… He is compassionate. He has not left us alone. Our Comforter walks with us. Strengthening us. Carrying us. This is sweet.
Hearts break with the fear of death, the shadow of sickness, the pangs of hunger, the grip of lost love. This is bitter.
So, this year when we ate the Charoset and Maror together – my mind wandered to the bitter sweet journey we all have in Yeshua… together the Bitter and the Sweet – it is bearable.
May we embrace G-d when life is bitter. May we cling to the sweetness of our future redemption as we labor. Keep our hearts from drifting to Egypt. May we be joyful that we have a blessed hope. Our Messiah lives! We live! May we not lose heart and trust G-d even when we don’t understand why it has to hurt so much.
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of G-d and not from ourselves;” 2 Cor. 4:7

I do not know you but I know your brother Aaron so the family name precedes itself. There is not much to say in a situation like this but to know that G-d totally is your strength especially when we encounter how fragile our lives are. I will say however that G-d has a purpose for all things and I am believing that more and more one day at a time. It is sobering and I want to encourage you that your fight against this but not only that your amazing attitude is inspiration enough for many people around you. May you be blessed with the peace that surpasses all understanding and I welcome the chance to meeting you at Grassroots sir.

You don’t know me yet but my husband and I met at and were members of Kehilat Ariel in San Diego for 12 years and were married by Rabbi Barney Kasdan. The Remigios are good friends of ours and Deb was one of my bridesmaids. Rochelle came and was a young girl then in 1994. I have been following her on FB and read about you and your challenges right now. My heart hurts for you and I am so sorry. You and your wife and all your family will be in our prayers. May the Lord give you strength and courage, wisdom and understand. May the peace of God which passes all understanding be yours in our Messiah Yeshua. We have a friend here in Atlanta at Beth Hallel who has had a form of leukemia and Been very ill and terminal for several years. He went to Israel about a cure he heard about there and was prayed over by a doctor who was an orthodox Jew. The cure they had did not apply to Greg’s form of cancer but when he got back to the States he felt remarkably better. When he went for his tests they found no cancer! The doctors could not explain it. He is feeling good now. He believed he is healed. We have been with him all these years and God has kept him alive in remarkable ways. The Lord’s ways are higher than ours and you will see victory!

Hi Sean – Steve and I are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. My brother was diagnosed with a terminal illness at the age of 10 and is is now 48. It is still a chronic illness that must be treated but God works in mysterious ways. He was only to have survived six months at the time of his diagnosis. I’m praying for you, Sean. I’m so sorry you and your family have to go through this. Our God is bigger and stronger than any diagnosis. Our dad is living proof that the prognoses of doctors need not confine or limit our lives. He is “Jehovah Rafa”. We will trust with you for healing.
Praise be to God. I do not know you, but my heart feels as if it does. I join forces in praying for you, knowing that the power of God is so very real and strong. My wonderful friend was diagnosed the same. His name is Dr. Don Phillips (out of San Jose.) He is still ministering, many years after his diagnosis. It hasn’t been easy, yet he remains strong with the love and help of his family and friends. Staying wrapped up in the love of those around you will help tremendously.Isolation will try to become your friend, rebuke it, deny it. Dr. Phillips is a wonderful counselor and minister. He is there, if you need. Your trials were a testimony to me today, and I do not even know you. God is already using this for His glory.
Hey Sean. I am so moved. We were at the airport in Newark on Saturday and I was reading your blog post to Heather and could not get the words out of my mouth. We love you and Sarah. We pray with you. I am asking pretty much everyone I know to join with us to pray for you guys.
I am reminded that we have a great Messiah and He calls us His friends. Everything He has learned from the Father He has made known to us. He has chosen you and appointed you so that you may go and bear fruit. Fruit that will last. So that whatever you ask in His name the Father will give to you. I am asking our God for wholeness for you. Be it in this life or the next I know that our God answers our prayers and I will not stop praying.

Remember that nothing in life is an accident. God works in strange and mysterious ways which we can never understand, but we do know that because of his great love for us, everything He does is for our ultimate good. I will pray that His will be ours, that you have a complete recovery according to His time frame, not ours. Always remember God’s tremendous love for you!

Just wanted to say I read your post from a post from Daniel Tasman, I am sorry about what is going on with you, and especially to receive the news on your Birthday. There are really no words to say to make you feel better except to know that I am praying for you. You know I don’t even know you but when I just prayed for you I felt so much of the Holy Spirit and I know that you will have peace in what ever way you choose to go with treatments, or not.
