Several months ago a book by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach hit book stores world wide… oh you don’t know who Shmuley is? Oh well he has been loyal adversary of the Gospel for as long as he can remember. If Shmuley was a Character in Veggie Tales, a computer animated kids cartoon with strong Christian values, he would be a potato. Not to reflect his character although some might argue, but rather the name just works with Boteach.
So Shmuley Potato wrote a book called Kosher Jesus that tries to reclaim Jesus as a hero of Judaism instead of the tradition view of being the start of the Christian religion. Shmuley’s not so innocent attempt to claim Jesus set of a huge bomb of controversy in the Jewish community with crazy allegations of conspiring with the enemy…Jews for Jesus, and with destroying the Jewish community. Now here is the interesting thing, this argument is not new and Shmuley has not added anything to the argument. So why is this such a big deal? Well, Mr. Potato has made himself kinda a big deal at least in some circles of the anti-missionary world and to admit anything being true about Jesus would be admitting to defeat in some peoples eyes and to a Jewish community whose only knowledge of Jesus is that He is not for them to then hear their beloved Rabbi say we might be wrong about Jesus is an incredible tragedy because who knows what weak minded young or old person or someone looking for truth, might decide and look for themselves at the claims of Jesus.
Now listen Mr. Potato’s intentions were good for the Jewish community because if he was right about Jesus being a good Jew and nothing more than all these Christians are just a farce and missions organizations who want to share the good news like Jews for Jesus will stop because it was all fake. The problem is that his book does not accomplish this it uses old arguments that have already been debunked by Jewish believing apologetic experts such as Michael Brown who by the way has already released a book following up on Potato’s book called “The Real Kosher Jesus”
Shmuly have been at it for a long time, here is a debate.
If this is your first time hearing about this I suggest you look into it just to engage your mind
